Plaza Mayor is the most important location in Castellón de la Plana, as it is home to all the main buildings and is situated at one of the busiest points in the city. Around this square, you’ll find the central market, the local police station, the city hall and Santa María Co-Cathedral.


The square has been completely pedestrianised and access is only permitted to official cars, the local police, lorries owned by market stall holders and funeral and wedding cars.

Ever since Castellón was first founded, its Plaza Mayor has been located on the same site. During the local fiestas, the square was the scene of bullfights, firecracker displays, floral offerings, all kinds of performances and cultural activities, demonstrations, etc.

Castellón de la Plana City Hall is an administrative building in the Baroque style, constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries and situated on the town’s Plaza Mayor.

It is a rectangular, three-storey building with a central staircase that leads to all the various rooms. The façade is made up of three sections separated horizontally by cornices. The ground floor has a little colonnade of five Roman arches that alternate with Tuscan pillars and this continues along one side of the building. The first floor is divided vertically into five sections, with Corinthian pillars and a flat entablature. The next floor is smaller and separated from the others by a projecting cornice. This lovely building is topped off with a balustrade.
