Mataró Town Hall is located on Calle la Riera, one of the town’s main streets. The building that houses it was built before the Catalan Modernist movement but some of its interior features were designed by the famous Catalan Modernist Puig i Cadafalch, such as the roof, which is dated 1893.
For a long period of time, Puig i Cadafalch was the town’s municipal architect. The roof of the building is adorned with symbols of Catalan culture, such as the coats of arms and the hand-painted borders.
The town hall is a square building with three storeys, each of them with five windows. On the middle storey, each window has a balcony. It is a place that cannot be missed by either tourists or locals because it is here that all the town’s cultural events are organised.
Next door to the town hall is Can Serra, home to the Museum of Mataró. This building was once the ancestral home of one Jeroni Serra, a wealthy local who became the town’s first representative at Court. It is in a Renaissance style and retains its original structure from 1565, and was not turned into a museum until 1894. It has a symmetrical façade, a voussoir arched doorway and wrought iron windows.
The area around the town hall is one of the busiest of the town. It has bars and cafés where you can take a break from sightseeing, parks and gardens in which to take a stroll and all the major fashion chains.
Parking your car in Mataró town centre tends to be an arduous task, especially in the afternoons and at the weekend. The best option for getting to the area is by car. We then recommend that you park it at our Saba car park, which is very close to Mataró Town Hall on Plaza Santa Anna.
